UAlbany aims to better weather forecasts with AI

“Researchers at the University at Albany’s Atmospheric Sciences Research Center are working with a Boston high-tech firm to develop new ways to forecast wind and extreme weather events much faster and more accurately than current forecasting methods can.

The company, Tomorrow.io, uses weather observations gathered by its own satellites and artificial intelligence platforms to provide weather forecasts and data to companies and government agencies like NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.”

SUNY Schenectady’s air control tower simulator may draw in students

“A $350,000 purchase may lead to an increase in students enrolling at SUNY Schenectady.

The college has joined the enhanced air traffic-collegiate training initiative, thanks to a new simulator that led the Federal Aviation Administration to certify that the program is the equivalent to the FAA’s own training course.”

GlobalFoundries adds $3B to investments in New York and Vermont

“GlobalFoundries says it’s tacking on another $3 billion to its previously announced $13 billion-plus investment planned for facilities in Saratoga County and Vermont.

The Malta-based chipmaker (Nasdaq: GFS) said the additional commitment will include support for ‘advanced research and development initiatives focused on packaging innovation, silicon photonics and next-generation GaN technologies.’”

Breeze Airways starts service at Albany airport

“Breeze Airways will begin its new service from Albany International Airport on Thursday.

The inaugural flight — scheduled for a 12:11 p.m. departure — will be headed for Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina.”

Lake George Freedom Boat Club expands to marina in Bolton Landing

“The owners of Freedom Boat Club in Lake George are expanding their membership business to a second marina on the Adirondack lake.

Matt O’Hara, along with his wife, Rebecca, are adding a second location for their Freedom Boat Club franchise at Water’s Edge Marina in Bolton Landing, which sold earlier this year to new owners looking to reinvigorate the property.”

Atlas Copco’s expansion in Voorheesville, once “on hold,” will move forward

“A Swedish manufacturer’s plans to build a 51,000-square-foot, high-bay addition at its complex in Albany County are moving forward once again.

Atlas Copco now anticipates spending about $32.8 million on the expansion — down from an earlier $40 million estimate — at its 45-acre campus off School Road in Voorheesville, according to a revised application submitted to the Albany County Industrial Development Agency.”
