SUMMARY:Understanding Your Competitor’s Suppliers Before Selecting Your Own
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 5th at Noon EST\nFood for Thought Virtual Product Development Luncheon\nUnderstanding Your Competitor’s Suppliers Before Selecting Your Own \nMastering your supply chain is just as important\, if not more so\, than perfecting your product. Knowing where your competitors source their products from can be game-changing. For example\, if you can source the same bulk rate for raw material\, you have a chance to be competitive and break into the market. Learn how to use international trade data to answer interesting questions like “Which suppliers do my competitors use?\,” “Which country should I choose to manufacture my products?”\, and “How do I know if the supplier I’m looking at is honest and the right fit for me?” \nBe prepared for a live demo! Think about a company you’d like to see import data for\, and we’ll take a look during the Q&A portion.  \nAbout The Speaker \nDave Applegate is the CEO and Founder of ImportYeti and has 8 years of product development and importing experience at WrestlingMart\, the world’s largest specialty wrestling store. ImportYeti is a free tool that allows users to access the US import and trade database to find wholesale suppliers. \nClick the registration button below to reserve your seat at our free virtual event! Virtual meeting room information will be sent to attendees before the event.  \n  \nRegister for Food for Thought\n  \n

SUMMARY:2022 Northeast & Mid-Atlantic Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Summit will bring together up to 350 people who work to\, or want to\, strategically engage local arts and cultures to help enhance and support communities (that is\, creative placemaking). Together\, they’ll explore timely and important issues facing neighborhoods\, towns and cities in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. \nIt is a hybrid event that runs from April 18 to 22.  Registration will open by January 21\, 2022.  The price will be around $250 for the full Summit.  An online-only ticket will be $50.  We anticipate having some scholarships available. \nWe’re meeting online April 18 and 19. You can participate in sessions live\, or watch recordings of any live sessions you missed. You can visit the exhibit booths at your convenience to learn more about what’s going on in the creative placemaking field\, and about organizations doing interesting work in New York’s Capital Region. Want to meet up with other participants\, or maybe connect with an affinity group to find other people who share your interests or are from your area? You can do that in the online Social Lounge. \nOn April 20\, you can get inspired by the Summit keynote speaker (to be announced)\, who will be speaking at Union College. If you can’t make it in person\, you can watch the presentation online. \nWe’ll be together in downtown Schenectady\, NY on April 21 and 22. You can expand your creative placemaking toolbox through workshops\, get and share big ideas in Strategic Conversations\, sharpen your planning and design skills through Strategy Labs\, or go on tours to see interesting things happening in the Capital District. \nWe’re also planning a public art activity in downtown Schenectady as part of the Summit. It will be on April 22 or 23\, so please plan to stay over for the weekend.  Registration will open by January 17\, 2022. You can buy a ticket to the online part of the Summit\, or for the complete Summit. Scholarships and single day tickets for April 21 and 22 are available. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nWhy should you go… \n\n\n\nIf you are looking for inspiration and ideas for new or better partnerships\, projects\, programs\, or policies to help communities — or just want to build more connections in creative placemaking — the Summit is the right place to be. \n\nIt’s also a good place for educators and researchers in cultural planning and policy\, arts administration\, community and economic development\, or urban planning and design to learn about model practices and meet leaders at the intersection of arts\, cultural heritage\, and public policy. \n  \n\nLEARN MORE & REGISTER HERE>>\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Food for Thought #7: 3D Printing of Ceramics with Lithoz America
DESCRIPTION:The Manufacturing Incubator at Tech Valley Center of Gravity presents Food for Thought: A Business & Product Development Virtual Luncheon Series. \nCeramic additive manufacturing (3D printing) opens doors to product development and small series manufacturing\, combined with functional complexity that was traditionally cost prohibitive for many applications. This talk will share the current state of the art of ceramic 3D printing and the types of applications where this large family of materials is finding use. \nCeramic materials play key roles in cars\, smartphones\, aircraft\, surgical tools\, dentistry\, and many other products\, but they are lesser known than plastics and metals because they are challenging to produce. Additive manufacturing simplifies ceramic development and production\, by eliminating tooling and machining\, and enabling shapes that were never before possible in these special materials. \nLithoz is the market leader in 3D printers and materials for advanced ceramic\, for use in aerospace\, medical\, dental\, energy\, and industrial applications. Lithoz America\, located in the Rensselaer Tech Park\, is the US branch of Lithoz GmbH from Vienna Austria. Lithoz America performs sales and support of systems\, materials & printing development and demonstration services\, and production of custom materials for printing. \nMr. Shawn Allan is Vice President of Lithoz America LLC\, which was established in 2017 to build and sell AM equipment to produce high-performance ceramic parts that are widely used in the electronics\, aerospace\, and biomedical industries. Mr. Allan has over 20 years of experience in ceramic processing\, technology development\, and additive manufacturing \nhttps://twitter.com/LithozAustria\nhttps://at.linkedin.com/company/lithoz-gmbh/ \n********************\nThe Manufacturing Incubator at Tech Valley Center of Gravity offers direct engineering consultation as well as coaching\, advice\, risk-mitigation strategies and need-based referrals for product development startups. This program is a community based\, independent and public program. The ideal clients are those who are developing a physical product and need assistance in prototype development\, design for manufacturing\, scaling up\, or other related design and manufacturing problems. \nWith our makerspace and prototyping center\, you can meet with your incubation team\, fabricate your prototype\, and manufacture your product all in the same building. \nThe Manufacturing Incubator is a certified NYS Incubator and affiliated Innovate 518 Hotspot partner supported by the Empire State Development Division of Science\, Technology\, and Innovation (NYSTAR). \n  \nREGISTER HERE>>\n  \n

SUMMARY:Rensselaer to Host 9th Annual National Manufacturing Day
DESCRIPTION:Virtual event will allow high school students and educators to explore critical role of manufacturing\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how a nimble and innovative manufacturing sector can address some of humanity’s most pressing and emergent needs — from the production of masks and shields to the biomanufacturing of therapeutics. \n\nBeginning on Monday\, November 2\, high school students from across the region will have an opportunity to explore some of the wide-ranging potentials of manufacturing during the 9th Annual National Manufacturing Day celebration at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n\nDue to the current pandemic\, students will be transported to the Rensselaer campus and local manufacturing facilities through virtual field trips during a week-long event that ends with a virtual panel discussion Friday\, November 6. \n\n“Each year we look forward to welcoming students to Rensselaer’s beautiful campus and the state-of-the-art facilities\, and sharing with them our passion and expertise in advanced manufacturing\,” said Shekhar Garde\, Dean of the School of Engineering at Rensselaer. “This year is especially important because the global pandemic has underscored the importance of applying science and engineering to everything we do\, including manufacturing solutions from PPEs to therapeutics and vaccines.” \n\nDuring one of the virtual tours\, students and educators will have an opportunity to see the Manufacturing Innovation Learning Lab (MILL) at Rensselaer\, where staff have been manufacturing critical face shields for the protection of frontline health care workers. \n\n“The pandemic has caused us to rethink the way we use and share our resources\,” said Sam Chiappone\, who is leading the face shield manufacturing effort at Rensselaer as the director of the MILL. “This is a great example of how resilient and flexible manufacturing can respond to immediate needs and contribute to the common good.” \n\nParticipants will also have the chance to virtually visit Simmons Machine Tool\, Ross Valve\, Ross Precision Machining\, or Industrial Tool & Die\, where they will get an up-close look at various manufacturing machines and processes\, and learn how these local companies have adapted to meet the needs of modern manufacturing. Students and educators will be provided with questions to reflect upon during each of the two tours. \n\nQuestions that students come up with throughout the virtual experiences can be shared on Friday\, November 6 at 9 or 10:30AM during two live virtual panel discussions with Rensselaer undergraduate and graduate engineering students\, and representatives from the local manufacturing companies they virtually toured. Reporters are also invited to virtually attend either panel discussion. \n\n“While the pandemic poses many challenges\, this virtual National Manufacturing Day event allows us to offer this educational opportunity to an unlimited number of students without\ngeographical constraints\,” said Elizabeth Herkenham\, the education outreach director for the School of Engineering at Rensselaer. \n\nThe Rensselaer National Manufacturing Day celebration is being presented by the MILL\, the Rensselaer School of Engineering Educational Outreach Department\, and Multimedia Services at Rensselaer. \n\nEducators who would like to register for their class to participate can do so before Wednesday\, November 4 by contacting School of Engineering Outreach Department at soeoutreach@rpi.edu. \n  \nLEARN MORE HERE>>
